Resilience is a superpower!

Active Minds Wellbeing Warriors

At Active Minds we talk about resilience a lot.  In fact, it’s one of the corner stones of our award-winning Wellbeing Warriors programme.

Resilience is something that everybody has, and it plays a major role in your life.  No matter how old you are, resilience is an essential skill that helps us all keep going when times get hard.  It helps us study, it helps us with our physical health and its crucial for us all to have positive mental health.

So, what exactly is resilience and how do we improve it?

Resilience is defined as the ability to adapt and recover from difficult or challenging life experiences.  It combines mental, emotional and behavioural flexibility to adjust to demands that we all face.

“Resilience is the currency of the world”

OK if its so important, how do we improve it and make it a strength?

No matter who you are, I can guarantee that you will face challenging circumstances in your life.  Learning how to develop and utilise resilience is essential for everyone.

See below for a few top tips on how you can improve this key skill.

Mindset:

  • Develop a positive outlook: Try to focus on the good things in your life and believe that you can overcome challenges.

  • Challenge negative thoughts: When faced with a setback, reframe the situation in a more positive light. Instead of "This is awful, I'll never recover," try "This is difficult, but I've gotten through tough times before."

  • Maintain a sense of purpose: Discover your “why”!  Focus on what you want to achieve and why you are doing it.

Relationships:

  • Build strong social connections: Surround yourself with supportive people who care about you and will listen without judgment. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

  • Give back to others: Helping those in need can be a great way to boost your own resilience and well-being.

Self-care:

  • Take care of your physical health: Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep.

  • Practice relaxation techniques: Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help you manage stress and maintain a sense of calm.

  • Develop healthy coping mechanisms: Find healthy ways to deal with difficult emotions, such as spending time in nature, listening to music, or pursuing hobbies.  Whatever you enjoy is what’s right for you!

Growth Mindset:

  • Embrace challenges: See setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.  Reflect on progress rather than perfection.

  • Develop problem-solving skills: The better you are at solving problems, the more confident you'll feel in your ability to handle whatever life throws your way.

  • Celebrate your accomplishments: Take time to acknowledge your progress, no matter how small.

Start small if you need to!  Small steps are positive steps and soon build up to make a big difference.
